The first MPS rigid insulation (now R-Shield Insulation) production facility opened, known as Big Sky Insulations (BSI). The founding family, the Huempfner family, has since expanded operations and product lines extensively, and still proudly owns the company today.

Our Brand Story
Family-owned and founded in 1977, Premier Building Systems (PBS) has grown under the same family ownership for more than 50 years. Originally founded as Big Sky Insulations (BSI), the company’s manufacturing and distribution focused on servicing the Big Sky region of the U.S. As ownership realized the growing demand for high performance building systems, BSI started to invest in the advancement of its sustainable construction solutions, and the organization has grown steadily since.
Premier’s ownership has been involved in pioneering the MPS, SIP and ICF industries in North America and continues to innovate new product applications. With a commitment to developing and utilizing the most efficient equipment and processes, PBS continually strives to provide exceptional value, service, and systems to their customers.

1977

1979
BSI became one of five founding members of AFM Corp (Associated Foam Manufacturers). All were rigid molded polystyrene (MPS) insulation manufacturers, with the products branded “Foam Control.” AFM Corp served as the marketing, R&D, and quality control arm for all the manufacturing owners, and quickly became the leading collective organization for the North America MPS/polystyrene industry.
1982
Brad Huempfner (President/owner of PBS), one of the founding family’s seven children, ran one of BSI’s MPS insulation “Foam Control” facilities in Southern Wisconsin. This manufacturing facility became a front-runner in laminating composites & insulation together for commercial roofing applications.
1984
AFM Corp started a new product innovation committee to research product diversification opportunities for North America. With his expertise in laminating building materials, Huempfner spearheaded in the Structural Insulated Panel (SIPs) research.
1985
AFM Corp received all major model building code requirements for the United States for Structural Insulated Panels (ICBO, BOCA, SBCCI) - The brand R-Control SIPS was born.
1988
AFM Corp has grown to 36 manufacturing locations across North America now manufacturing and distributing R-Control SIPS and Foam Control MPS Insulation.
1990
BSI is one of the first MPS insulation manufacturers to produce 100% recycled polystyrene.
1994
AFM develops ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) product line called R-Control ICFs (now Premier ICF).
2005
Huempfner, now the primary share owner of BSI, purchases the ICF product line (now Premier ICF) from AFM, and managed distribution for all other AFM companies.
2018
After more than a decade of continued growth, Huempfner purchased Premier Building Systems & the widely known “Premier SIPS” brand from Carlisle Construction Materials. Premier SIPS originally launched in the early 1980’s and had almost 40 years of expertise to add to the new organization.
2019
Combined under common ownership, the R-Control SIPS & Premier SIPS brands are the largest and most reputable in North America - covering the western two-thirds of the United States and Canada.
2020
AFM sold its MPS insulation brand “Foam Control,” however Big Sky Insulations maintained its MPS Insulation manufacturing facilities and teams. Big Sky’s MPS products were re-branded to “R-Shield” Insulation & Geofoam.
2021
To streamline the Premier family of products, the ICF product line is rebranded as Premier ICF.
